Better Beauty Through Science Doesn’t Mean We’re Not Aging
Saturday, April 3rd, 2010It seems that there might be confusion when it comes to aging versus looking younger. The advertisers have naturally used words that are commonly associated with being young. Youthful, anti-aging, and of course, the common phrase, ‘turn back the hands of time.’ Looking young isn’t the same thing as being young.
After liposuction your body may not even closely resemble a woman’s body of more than 40 years old. And yet it can be so easy to forget that the heart is still 40 years old. The best skin care products can wipe off those wrinkles but that doesn’t mean you don’t need skin cancer screenings every year. We have the scientific ability to look and feel years younger than we are, but we can’t openly ignore the important annual check ups that keep us that way.
While a good muscle workout routine can tone up your body to be as incredible as it was in your twenties, you still need annual screenings. It is an accurate argument that a well toned, cared for body is in much better shape that one that is twice the weight at half the age. Perhaps, but breast cancer is an equal opportunity striking force. It doesn’t care how old you look or feel.
Science has proven quite a bit to us. It has helped us to retain beauty longer and it has helped us detect and aggressively treat the early stages of numerous diseases. With early detection the average survival rate of women between 40 and 60 has increased more than 80% with the increase in public awareness. Mammograms and other tests are now just commonplace and should be done every year.
It’s cool to be cool. You’re hanging out with the under 40 crowd and you fit in physically and socially. It can actually help you forget your own age as you plunder forward into a life that may even be healthier as well as more fun than when you were younger. You just can’t forget that the inside is still affected by age.
It has been said that the ability to strive for a wrinkle free, anti sun spot, perfectly toned face is a wonderful scientific achievement. The fact that breast cancer survival has increased by over 80% over the last ten years is also a wonderful scientific achievement.
We all want to look young, act young, and play like we’re young. And there really isn’t anything wrong with that. However, we have to remember that we might not feel like we are our age today, but we have to be responsible for keeping up with the health demands of our time.
